Floating through my Remscapes every night, where things that I've run from magically come to life... Things I thought I'd worked on, guess I tried... Scapes to get lost in whenever I close my eyes.
Making an album was the reason I started songwriting and producing in the first place. Albums like AJR's Neotheater made me want to create a musical experience that took place in a fictional world that people could visit whenever they wanted. Three years in the making, Remscapes follows my descent through dreams. By avoiding confronting problems that bother me when I'm awake, my stresses have began to take form in my sleep.
I recently watched a documentary on the film Fitzcarraldo where its director, Werner Herzog, stated that if he wasn't going to finish the movie, he might as well die. What he said resonated with me deeply because it helped me realize how I felt about making music. During the process of making this album I missed a lot of social events, nights out, probably dating, ect. At all times, making Remscapes felt like the most important thing I could possibly be doing with my life. I needed to be making something that reflected who I was or it almost in a way felt like I'd cease to exist. I needed and continue to need to create.
Finishing it was bizzare. My friend Ken has described putting out music like having a kid that you love, spend time with, want to protect, but eventually have to give away. While there's a lot of nuance to the process, I do like his analogy a lot. Some of the songs on Remscapes have exclusively belonged to me for over 3 years. Each one represents a different time in my life, a different experience that I've lived. Now that its out, even if the audience is small, the music's not exclusively mine anymore. Its exciting, terrifying, and the most fulfilling thing that I've ever done in my entire life.
